Ice dams in Solvay
Ice dam leaks in Solvay: old village houses and the first few feet of the roof

If your Solvay ceiling stains in a thaw and the edge is hung with icicles, the trouble is most likely at the eave. Tell us when the stain shows, and we book a roofer to price that edge.
What we do
Describe the roof in a few lines, and an independent roofing contractor comes out to look at it, then prices the work for you in writing.
What we promise while you decide
- No charge from us, whether you book or not.
- The roofer's price comes to you on paper first.
- You may ask for a repair price beside the replacement one.
- Credit terms are spelled out on our Terms page.
Workmanship and contract terms belong to the roofer you hire.

Before you agree to ice dam roofing in Solvay
Why does my Solvay ceiling stain in March?
March has the most freeze and thaw crossings of any month in the area. Meltwater freezes again at the cold overhang and pushes back under the shingles.
Do I need a whole new roof for an ice dam leak?
Not necessarily. The damage is often at the eave. Ask for an edge repair price beside a full replacement price.
What does the code require at the eave?
An ice barrier from the edge to 24 inches inside the wall, and a drip edge. Ask whether your estimate includes both.
Can chipping the ice off the edge fix it?
Please do not try it. Chipping can damage shingles and does not fix the cause, and a roof edge in winter is no place for you. Ask a roofer to look instead.
Why Solvay's eave matters more than the middle of the roof
Solvay houses are old. The median date is 1947, and more than four in ten homes date from 1939 or earlier. That is a proxy for age, not for your eave. Housing this old may have had its roof covering and ceilings redone, so ask what is under yours.
An ice dam forms when snow melts on the warm part of the roof and the water refreezes at the cold overhang. The dam holds back more melt, which backs up under the shingles. An ice dam can leave wet underlayment, soft boards by the wall and a ceiling stain just inside.
Tell the roofer when the stain shows. A stain that appears only in a thaw is the pattern the dam leaves.

What the state code puts at the roof edge
The residential code for New York says the eave gets an ice barrier, made of two cemented underlayment layers or a self-adhering sheet, and it must reach 24 inches inside the outside wall. It also calls for a drip edge at the eaves on a shingle roof.
Check that the estimate includes the barrier and the drip edge, and note how far up the slope the barrier goes. On a replacement, the tear-off to the deck lets the roofer lay them correctly. On a repair, the roofer may open a strip along the edge.
The federal energy guide says the lasting cure for ice dams starts with air sealing, insulating and ventilating. That is upstream of the roof. Your roofer's estimate is about the edge.
What to tell the roofer about your Solvay eave
At Syracuse's airport weather station the temperature crosses freezing on about 84 days a year, and the worst month is March, not January. A mild March week is when a Solvay edge can show a stain.
Write down which wall the stain is on, how far it is from the corner, and which month it appears. If the soffit is stained or soft, add that. A roofer who reads those notes knows where to look first.
Ask for the edge repair priced separately from the full roof. If the deck at the edge is soft, ask for a per-sheet price for the boards before work starts.
Keep off the roof and stay clear of any wires. A roofer can read the edge from the yard.
Tell-tales
What a Solvay homeowner sees that points to ice dam roofing
| What you see | What it may point to |
|---|---|
| Icicles along the front or one side | Note which side and how long they get. A photo from the yard helps. |
| A stain just inside an outside wall | Date it, and say how far the stain sits from the wall. |
| Peeling paint on the soffit or fascia | Photograph it from the ground and tell the roofer. |
| Stains that dry out in cold weather | If they return each thaw, the timing points to the eave. |
